Astronomical Autumn
Welcome back, all! We're just back from a week's vacation on Cape Cod, where there were whales, seals, sunsets, beaches, mini golf, friends, sailing, a campfire, and a whole lot of delicious seafood! The weather was awesome - even the couple of days that were cool and windy were enjoyable. As you know, I don't take a lot of pictures - so I'll have to get busy photographing all the yarn here in the coming days!
Yes, today is the first day of Fall, and we had the AC on last night - it was a balmy 86 degrees yesterday, and last night didn't get below 74. We're expecting a cold front to come through later today with some wind and rain; judging by the color of things, we could really use the rain here.
So what kinds of yarn projects did I complete whilst away for so long? Well - none.
The good news is that I have nearly finished Waiting for Rain - I saved the bind-off to do this week. The bad news, if there is ever really any bad news when it comes to yarn, is that I completely changed my mind about adding in the Kidsilk Haze for the lace sections. I nearly completed the first lace section and realized that the Kidsilk section looked like a hairy growth on the shawl. That each yarn separately was absolutely stunning - including the Kidsilk section - made it more difficult for me to admit that I really needed to make the whole thing in the Malabrigo. I had two different skeins, and being kettle dyed of course they were different shades of the same color, so I swapped them out for each section of the shawl. I expect to have it finished and blocked within the next few days, and I'll definitely post a picture. In the end - I thought it was an amazing pattern, and I'll likely make it again. The lace sections are fairly straightforward (although they require counting, both back and forth), and there are miles of garter stitch for social knitting. I enjoyed every bit of this pattern!
Inbetween - especially when I had to count for the lace sections and I was not in a position to count (on the beach or by the campfire) - I worked on the last garter section of All About That Brioche. The last several days have, basically, been all about garter stitch. Not a bad thing.
Of course I brought 8 million other projects to work on, just in case these two flew off the needles. They'll all stay in the near-term queue, except maybe those cute little socks, which are turning out to be absolutely huge - and even then I might just rip them out and start over with a smaller size, a la Yarn Harlot. I didn't bring Luckdragon - I figured that will require some attention and planning; the pattern is about 36 pages long so some parsing will be needed!
Also - I've reached the end of the GLC Afghan, but needed to order some more yarn to finish it off - I'm out of nearly everything, but needed a bit more green to finish a section, and then a bunch of the brown for the border. I expect that will be finished up within the next couple of weeks.
New to the queue - September Hat! Mine will be red. I'm starting to run low on the supply of Northampton that I've been using for these, and will need to start digging around in the stash for what to use for the remaining three months. Also, I'll need another plan for the 5 skeins of the Kidsilk Haze that I didn't use for the shawl. After working with it, a jacket/sweater is entirely impractical - it would felt in like 2 seconds. But a scarf or a shawl (likely more than one) would be lovely. More to come!
In other news - the Whatever that has been planted in our field continues to grow, and currently looks like grass with a few weeds here and there. The leaves are starting to change color and a few have fallen already. All else seems fairly quiet!
