First Sock!!

Image
Hello on this windy Monday!  I hope this finds you safe and well; we're good here! Yesterday afternoon I put the finishing touches on the first sock from the CSM: I'm going to finish the second one in the same way. So, things I like so far - the tubes are wicked fun to crank, and they only take maybe 1/2 hour (unless you drop a stitch, then double that).  You can use all the yarn on the skein, because what I did was just unravel enough to knit the cuff in rib, and the second sock was just a continuation of the tube!  I also like the mix of hand knitting and machine knitting.  And I like using about 20g of leftovers for the heels and toes. What I don't like so far - there are a lot more ends to work in this way.  And - I'm not wild about this first Afterthought Heel - it's a bit short.  I used exactly half of the stitches, but in some cases a deeper heel is called for, especially in shortie socks that have a tendency to slip.  Also - I'm pretty sure this yarn was

Fewer Irons, A Bigger Fire

Hello on this cloudy Saturday!  I hope this finds you safe and well; we're good here. I can't believe I haven't posted anything in so long!  It's been busy here, but it's all good.  Let me start with the yarn. At long last, today I'm prepared to start knitting my very first Afterthought Heel: It's been awhile already, but this is one of the socks made from my first tube on the sock knitting machine!  The toe looks a bit more neon in this pic than in real life - it's actually a closer match to the yellow in the sock.  Anyway - I hand-knit the cuffs (just K1P1 rib) and toes (the usual semi-squared version I like), and have cut in for the heel.   Ack - cut you say?  Yes.  Thanks to kirbywirby's YouTube video , I'm off and rolling without a care in the world.  Essentially this version of a heel looks a lot like a semi-squared toe!  I'm not quite sure about the dimensions yet, but I'll use the old try-it-on-as-you-go approach for this first pa

The Birds

Hello on Taco* Tuesday!  I hope this finds you safe and well; we're good here. *Yes, finally - tacos on Tuesday once again!  I've learned that you can pretty much put any protein, an interesting sauce, slaw of some sort, and possibly cheese or nuts (depending on the sauce) in a soft taco shell.  It makes for a tasty, if not messy, meal! I continue to work fairly monogamously on knitting projects - either preemie mitts or the NNWA, so no yarn pics to show you just yet.  I will also be dyeing up some sock yarn for a special request.  Oogyhubby's friends' wife (if you can follow that) has asked for socks in pink and purple, and I figured out a way to do this without breaking any of our yarn rules (which I did enough of back in February and haven't even done any of my penance knitting, LOL).  I have some stash sock yarns that will work, so if I crank them as tubes and then dye yarn in pink and purple for heels and toes it should all work!  (Of course I still need to fi

Hello on another non-taco* Tuesday!  I hope this finds you safe and well; we're good here. *Last week's chicken stew turned out terrific!!!  There was even enough to stow away in the freezer for two more meals!  Tonight I'm making chicken with pea risotto!  I don't have much knitting progress to report at all this week!  I've been hacking away at the Next Nephew Wedding Afghan, preemie mitts, and attempting a full sock on the sock machine.  All are moving forward, but slowly. So in the meantime I thought I'd share a picture of Benson!! This is his attempt to lure me away from my desk in order to play throw/fetch with him.  It probably worked, LOL - who can resist a dog that lets you see the insides of his nose?? In wildlife news - last week we had a bunch of Canadian geese hang out on our lawn and field for the better part of a day.  We were in the middle of a mild thaw, so perhaps they thought we were a pond?  They sure do make a lot of noise!  Later, after the
