Daisy - Day 1!
Hello on this Homemade Pizza Tuesday!
As of Sunday evening, we have a new member of our household:
This is Daisy, a sweet girl from a shelter in Kentucky! She's a blue tick coonhound, which means that her black-and-white speckling can often appear blue-ish, and she is bred to tree raccoons (so far there hasn't been any of that!). The rescue we got her through focuses on orphaned pets and shuttles them all over the place to go into foster care before finding them a new home.
Daisy is super sweet and still a bit overwhelmed - she'd only been with her foster mom for about a week, so between all the car rides, her energetic foster sisters, and the cold weather (today there is snow!) it must be all a bit of a blur!
We don't know much else about her except that her owner passed away after a long illness (that likely involved coughing - she gets upset when I cough in the morning) and she gained a ton of weight. She's about 9 years old. We have an appointment with a local vet for a full physical, but like human doctors they're booking these into January already. Her sparse health records indicate she was spayed only about a year ago, so I'm wondering if she wasn't used for breeding before going to live with the person who fed her so much. She's got beautiful coloring and such a sweet disposition.
And another thing that you might be able to tell from this photo - she's got heterochromia iridis - two different colored eyes! It's a bit disconcerting until you get used to it. Even cooler is when I use a flash - one is red and the other is green! I'll take more pics with the flash once she settles in a bit more.
She's spent the last two nights quietly sleeping on one of the couches in the living room. Not sure if she's afraid of the stairs or just knows she's too heavy to manage them, so she seems fine with being left alone down here for now. She does sleep a lot during the day as well, but she loooooves to go for walks (even if she then shortens them because of the snow!). And for a pudgy dog she can really motor on!
Oogyhubby have been taking turns hanging out with her and otherwise attempting to go about our typical daily routines. She's slept a lot during the day as well - what we don't know is how much of that is just fatigue, how much is age, and how much might be boredom. Oogyhubby got her a pretty pink collar and a couple of squeaky toys yesterday - she got very excited about the toys for a couple of minutes but then either got bored or decided that attacking them wasn't very lady-like. We got her a "day bed" that we can move around so if she wants to sleep next to me on the floor (which she is doing right now) at least she'll have more padding than the carpet.
We'll see what Day 2 brings!
Obligatory knitting content: I'm still working on Warm Sock #2, but I'm past the heel and am headed down the foot.
Hope you're safe and well and making plans for the long holiday weekend!
